special sale - "original" pastel
Maurice Quentin de la Tour was one of the greatest pastellists who ever lived, and was known at the court of Louis XV of France as the "thief of souls", for his ability to capture a sitter's very essence. Copying his portraits can be a frustrating exercise, but this piece came out reasonably well. The eighteenth-century beauty who sat for the original pastel, the Countess of Coventry, was one of the trio of famous Gunning sisters, who stole the hearts of fashionable London in the 1750's.
